Mount Nijo dakenobori (Climbing)
Every year on April 23rd, locals from around Nijo Mountain gather for “dakenobori” (peak climbing), a tradition of ascending Nijo Mountain. The event has a long history, even being mentioned in the Illustrated Guide to the Famous Sites of the Saikoku Pilgrimage of 33 Temples, a book published in the Edo period. It started as a way for people to celebrate atop the mountain, enjoying a feast and the fresh greenery. In modern times, the tradition has merged with beautification efforts led by the Nijo Mountain Beautification Council, which brings together Katsuragi City, Kashiba City and Taishi Town. It is now cherished as an opportunity to help clean up the mountain while experiencing the joy of the climb and connecting with nature.
