About the Mountaineering Nijo Mountain!
Every year on April 23rd, the “Mountaineering” (岳のぼり – Dake-nobori) event is held.
Originally, this was a custom in the foothills that benefited from the water flowing from Mt. Nijo. People would climb the mountain carrying cloths and banners inscribed with “prayer for rain” (kiu – 祈雨) to receive water from “Goku no Gongen” (獄の権現), reflecting the influence of Katsuragi Shugendō (a form of mountain asceticism).
It is believed that this was also a form of entertainment before the busy farming season.
Today, it has become a day for local residents to enjoy hiking while cleaning up the mountain.
