Sumo Museum, Kehaya-za, Katsuragi City: Exhibition – “Yokozuna Through the Ages”

The highest rank in Sumo wrestler, “Yokozuna”. From the inaugural Yokozuna, Akashi Shiganosuke, to the current active 73rd Yokozuna, Terunofuji Haruo, the Japan Sumo Association officially recognizes 73 Yokozuna. However, there are also numerous unofficial Yokozuna not recognized by the Japan Sumo Association, and the status of Yokozuna compared to ranks below Ozeki remains shrouded in mystery.

This exhibition focuses on the Yokozuna, introducing and delving deeply into the stories and status of all Yokozuna officially recognized by the Japan Sumo Association.

Special Exhibition: “Yokozuna Through the Ages”

  • Exhibition Period: April 27, 2024 (Saturday) to September 30, 2024 (Monday)
  • Venue: Katsuragi City Sumo Museum “Kehayaza”
  • Opening Hours: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Exhibition Items: 14th Yokozuna Sakaigawa’s leather wallet (with accompanying document), Nishiki-E depicting Isokaze Otojiro (unofficial Yokozuna), In addition, approximately 150 items including images, biographies, and anecdotes of all 73 successors recognized by the Japan Sumo Association are introduced.
  • Closed: Every Tuesday and Wednesday (Open on public holidays)
  • Admission Fee: Adults (High School Students and Above) 300 yen, Elementary/Middle School Students 150 yen, Preschoolers and below Free

*If you are in possession of a physical disability certificate, mental disability health and welfare certificate, or developmental disability certificate, admission is free upon presentation of your certificate at the reception. One caregiver accompanying you is also entitled to free admission.
*Group Discounts (applicable to groups of 20 or more): Adults 250 yen, Children 120 yen
