About the Taima-dera Neri Kuyō Eshiki
The Taima-dera Neri Kuyō Eshiki is a re-enactment of the legend of Princess Chūjō, who is said to have attained enlightenment in her living body at Taima-dera Temple. It is a representative spring event of Yamato (present-day Nara Prefecture), believed to have originated in the mid-Heian period.
Its official name is Shōju Raigō Nerikuyō Eshiki (聖衆来迎練供養会式), but it has been affectionately known by locals as “Neri Kuyō,” “Oneri,” and “Taima Renzo.”
Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan
- Its distinctive slow procession across a bridge.
- Its development in connection with local legends.
These aspects led to its designation as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in the 6th year of Reiwa (2024).
