Exhibition Overview
This exhibition showcases a diverse selection of works from Japan’s Edo and Meiji periods to the present day, featuring crafts, paintings, and contemporary art. Visitors are invited to explore and enjoy the varied styles on display.
Historical Significance and Ceramics Production
Yokohama, a historically significant port with a foreign settlement, emerged as a major ceramics producer during the Meiji period. Notably, “Yokohama ware,” including the renowned Makuzu ware, captivated European and American audiences with its intricate craftsmanship and innovative designs, earning widespread acclaim.
Sculptural Furniture
In addition to ceramics, Yokohama also produced highly sculptural furniture for export. These pieces, including chairs and tables, combined Japanese and Western elements, featuring precise carvings of dragons, pine trees, bamboo, plum blossoms, phoenixes, and other Japanese motifs. Recently, Yokohama ware has been returning to Japan, and the rare sculptural furniture, scarcely found in Japan, is garnering renewed attention for its creativity.
Artistic Excellence Over the Years
Over the years, works created with exceptional techniques, rich individuality, and artistic excellence have continued to captivate audiences. In the modern era, artists produced paintings and sculptures with lifelike realism, a style originating from the West. Today, contemporary artists continue to experiment boldly with their unique styles.
