Sense Island Art Festival | “Island in the Dark” 2022

The theme for 2022 is “Sensory Behaviour”.

The “Sense Island” is a unique art festival organised on the uninhabited island of Sarushima, in Yokosuka city, Japan.

This was a one-of-a-kind art festival embracing nature, time, and the senses.

Visitors were asked to turn off their mobile phones and engage with the island’s wildlife and artworks in the dark, with their minds sharply focused on their surroundings.

The art festival was first held in autumn 2019, postponed in 2020 due to the Corona virus, and then held in winter 2021.

How the 2021 event was conducted.

By eliminating technology and our sense of time, the artworks and immersive experiences in nature on Sarushima Island encourage introspection and rediscovery of all our senses.

Building on the “Sense Island”  concept, this year’s works and performances will develop the theme of “Sensory Behaviour” designed to stimulate the visitor’s senses to the maximum.

This year, we will introduce the artwork and projects both on Sarushima island and in the town.
