ABOUT
The Spartan Race is the world’s premier and largest obstacle race, with over 170 races held annually in 40 countries.
The race was held for the first time in Japan in May 2017, in response to expansion of the personal sports market: running, walking, cycling, high intensity training, and the growing fitness market, (including 24-hour gyms).
Various physical fitness elements are incorporated as obstacles in the running course.
The race requires not only cardiorespiratory fitness, but also overall muscular strength.
The main race types are the Sprint (5km), the Super (10km) and the Beast (20km), each with some 20 to 30 obstacles.
A Stadion (5km) is also held once a year at the stadium.
Participants are allowed to assist one another to complete the obstacles, however anyone not successfully completing an obstacle must instead do a prescribed number of burpee jumps (a series of squats, push-ups, and jumps).
A 1 to 2 km race for kids under 12 with easier obstacles has also proved increasingly popular.
The races are divided into three categories: the Elite Spartan Race Point Series with cash prizes; the Age Race category with prizes, awards, and rankings; and the Open Race for all individuals and teams.
