Oyaji Temple (Oya Kannon)
Oya Temple is believed to have been founded by the famous monk Kukai in 810. It has the Oya Kannon, which is Japan’s oldest Buddhist stone sculpture.
The temple has an appealing, harmonious sight of a main hall under the naturally eroded pumice tuff called Oya-ishi stone. The stone Buddhist sculpture inside the hall is doubly designated as a National Special Historic Site and a National Important Cultural Property.
