Kannami Buddha Statues Museum
There are a number of Buddha statues located in Japan’s ancient capitals of Nara and Kyoto, but many Buddha statues also remain in Izu.
In Kuwahara-ku, Kannami-cho, 24 Buddha statues continued to be protected by pious people.
There are the three Buddhist statues “Amida Nyorai and the two guardian statues on the sides” which were produced by Jikkei, a sculptor from the Kei group, and which are designated as important national cultural assets.
In addition, there are 16 statues including the “Yakushi Nyorai seated statue” and “the twelve divine generals” which are cultural assets designated by Shizuoka prefecture, as well as five Buddhist statues which are cultural assets designated by Kannami-cho.
Those statues were donated to Kannami-cho by the Kuwahara district in 2008. The “Kannami Buddha Statues Museum” was constructed by Kannami-cho and opened in 2012.
In the museum, volunteer guides help visitors and show them around.
There are a lot of ruins around the museum, including “Kuwahara Saigoku Sanju-san syo Kannon Reijo (33 temples)”, guardian deities for travelers, as well as Jijin and Kosin towers, so you can enjoy walking around these stone statues.
