Saifukuji Temple
The temple was one of the most famous temples of the Jodo sect, founded by a distinguished priest Ryounyo Shonin who played a significant role in the 14th century.
Major buildings in the precincts of the temple are designated as national important cultural properties and a reception room and its garden as a place of national scenic beauty.
During the trip of “The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” Sora Kawai, a pupil of Basho Matsuo, visited the temple after parting from Basho at Yamanaka Onsen.
