Saitobaru Burial Mounds
Saitobaru Burial Mounds comprise a cluster of more than 300 ancient tumuli built between the early 4th century and the early 7th century.
In May 2018, “Monuments of the ancients: Creating a picture on the plateau Kofun landscapes in the southern lands of Miyazaki,” including Saitobaru Burial Mounds, were recognized as Japan Heritage sites.
At “Oninoiwaya Tumulus, ” a round burial mound with a diameter of 36 meters built in the final stage of the Kofun (tumulus) period (about 300 to 538 AD), visitors can enter the inside of its horizontal stone chamber.
Each year, “Osahozuka Burial Mound” and “Mesahozuka Burial Mound,” presumed imperial tombs, are open to the public only on the second day of the Kofun Festival.
Visitors can enjoy the view as if they went back in time to the days when the burial mounds were built.
In spring, cherry blossoms and rape blossoms are in full bloom.
In autumn, cosmos blooms brilliantly. It is possible to request an arrangement of a volunteer tour guide of Saitobaru. (Reservation required.)
