Setagaya Hachimangu Shrine

Setagaya Hachimangu dates back to 1091 (Kanji 5).
On the way back after Minamoto Yoshiie won the Gosannen War, when he stayed to wait for the heavy rain to recover at this Miyanosaka region, it was said that the victory was due to the blessing of Hachiman Okami, who was the tutelary deity.
The venerable shrine is said to have begun when the spirit of Usa Hachimangu of the Buzen Province was invited and worshipped.
In 1546 (Tenmon 15), the seventh owner of the Setagaya Castle, Yoriya Kira, restored the shrine and further developed it.
It is also said that 1546 was the year that it was actually founded.
In the past, the victory or defeat of ritual sumo matches foretold the bountiful harvest of the following year, and was a sincere appreciation for the bountiful harvest that year, therefore rings and power stones (a large stone used for testing strength) remain in the precinct.
