Takenari 500 Buddha Monuments
This is the prefecture's Important Cultural Property.
It is a very rare type of temple in Japan that was born out of the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism.
Around 500 Shinto and Buddhist arhats are enshrined on top of a 7-meter-high earthen pedestal.
In February 1852, the monk Shoku Jinzui from Takenari raised the idea and the stonemasons from Kuwana under Fujiwara Chobei completed it in the year 1866.
It is said that if you look closely at each arhat, you will find one that looks very much like you.
