Kakuhanji Temple
The 17th lord of DATE family, DATE Masamune had Buddhist priest Kosaisouitsu, founded this temple in current-day Toyamamachi, Yonezawa in 1586, as the family (Bodaiji) temple of DATE Terumune, father of Masamune.
It was then moved to Iwadeyama (current-day Osaki, Miyagi Prefecture) by the DATE family before being moved to the present location in 1602 through Atagoyama.
The temple was destroyed by a large fire in 1876, and even after being rebuilt, it was plagued by more fires until the current main hall was rebuilt in 1967 as a non-combustible building.
On the northwest side of the main hall is the tomb of Hoshunin, the birth mother of Masamune.
