Reiunzan Banryuji Temple
The Reiunzan Banryuji temple, founded in 1648 during the early Edo period,
was initially located near Meguro Gyoninzaka.
In 1709, it was rebuilt at its current location, which protects the back gate of Edo, and its name changed to the Reiunzan Shomyoin Banryuji temple.
The temple, previously part of the very strict Ritsu sect retains stone engravings of their precepts but is now part of the more moderate Jodo sect of Buddhism.
The principal feature is a seated wooden Amida Nyorai, made at the end of the Heian period (794-1185).
Benzaiten, one of the “Seven Gods of Good Fortune”, is enshrined in a
stone statue in a grotto, and a wooden statue in a niche in the hall.
