Shorinzan Daienji temple
The Shorinzan Daienji temple, enshrining Dainichi Nyorai, was founded in the first half of the 17th century by Daikaihoin.
The temple is located on Gyonin-zaka, named after the ascetic monks of Yudenzan, (one of the three Dewa mountains) who built the temple.
The "Kaiun Shofuku Daikokuten" statue, in the main hall, was modelled after Tokugawa Ieyasu and carved by his tutor Tenkai.
There is also a “Daienji Daikokuten” hidden Budhha statue in the Shaka hall.
In 1772, fire broke out in the temple's main hall, spread from what is now Meguro to Kitasenju and burned a third of Edo, killing many people. Because even the roof of Edo Castle was burnt down, the Daienji was not allowed to be rebuilt for 76 years.
Together, the Meireki fire, the Hinoetora fire, and this Meguro Gyonin-zaka fire are known as the three great fires of Edo (Tokyo).
