A lake with the atmosphere of a peaceful fishing village
Lake Hiruga is one of the Mikata Goko (Five Lakes of Mikata) and is the only saltwater lake in the Goko because it faces the sea.
Although it is the smallest of the five lakes, it has a different atmosphere from the other four lakes, partly because its water is seawater.
Because it is a saltwater lake, there are fishing ponds where visitors can catch sea fish, and fishing boats are moored and function as a harbor, creating a tranquil fishing port scene.
At the mouth of the river at the foot of Hyuga Bridge, which connects Hyuga Lake and Wakasa Bay, the "Hyuga Tug of War Event" (underwater tug of war) is held every January.
This ritual is performed to drive away evil spirits and pray for a good catch of fish, and is designated as a national Selected Intangible Folk Cultural Asset.
