The History of Izu Nagaoka Onsen Spa
Izu Nagaoka Onsen Spa is located in Izu-no-kuni city in the Shizuoka Prefecture.
It is just 90 minutes away from Tokyo by Shinkansen (Super train) and JR line.
There are two spas in the both side of the Mt. Genji that is placed in the center of this area; one is older and is called “Kona Onsen Spa” in the East side of the mountain.
It is said that that Minamoto-no-Yoritomo, such as the founder and the first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate of Japan in the 12th century, visited the “Kona Onsen Spa”.
The other one is called “Nagaoka Onsen Spa” in the West side of the mountain and was found in 1903.
The name of the “Nagaoka” is based on the legend in the Heian era (794-1185).
The courtier (Miyahito) who was exiled to Izu city in the Heian era named the “Nagaoka”, because he was impressed by the landscape of “Nagaoka” that reminded him the “Nagaoka” in Kyoto city.
The “Kona Onsen Spa” was opened around 1,300 years ago.
About the story of “Kona” district was also written in the history book “Azuma Mirror (Azuma Kagami)” in the Kamakura era (1185 -1333).
