Shizuoka Sengen Jinja Shrine
Shizuoka Sengen Jinja, which overlooks Shizuoka city from the foot of Mt. Shizuhata, is comprised of seven shrines: Kanbe, Asama, Otoshimioya, Hayama, Yachihoko, Sukunahikona, and Tamaboko Shrines. The group of shrines has a history of over 2,000 years.
Receiving the devout support of the Imperial Court and the Shogunate from long ago, the shrines were also deeply respected by the feudal lords of the Imagawa, Takeda, Toyotomi, and Tokugawa clans.
The current shrines were rebuilt by the Tokugawa shogunate over a sixty-year period, from 1804 through 1865.
Skilled carpenters and engravers were invited from throughout Japan to work on the project.
The project is also believed to be the origin of many traditional Shizuoka crafts.
All 26 buildings constructed during the Edo period (1603-1868) have been designated as Important Cultural Properties.
